Changing the Study Programme

When I entered to university, I must admit that my opinion and concept about the career was completely different to now. In this time, 2014, I imagined the journalism like a person sitting in his desk meanwhile he writes articles for a newspaper. I liked this notion and I wanted this type of professional because I believed that was the best option for someone with interest in humanist science and investigation area.

However, in this last five years studying journalism, I found several weaknesses in the way of teaching from university. For example, School of Journalism at Universidad de Chile, its curriculum is not adapted to new times where be a conventional journalist don´t guarantee a good job or working position.

Although mass medias always have been seen as a place where get money, the last time, the industry do it that who controlled the big communication companies did not be people near to journalism but businessmen.

Today, a journalist also should have skills in other areas like computer science, business or publicity because are professions near to our work and an important part within management of communication company.

In this moment, our university is not training their students in these areas because their academic authorities still think in an old model of journalism from last century, like I imagined this career five years ago. We know that, in journalism, job market is saturated, so, found new places where we work is very important for do not be the last link of the communication industry chain.
